Current developments in academia are going against the idea of a convivialist university. Universities are ranked and put into a worlwide hierarchy, competitive funding erodes the friendly competition among researchers (based on gifts), a managerial logic is implemented, and universites are increasingly seen as mere assets in global economic competition. A really good starting point for debates around these questions is Richard Münch’s book ‘Academic Capitalism’. Sociologist Münch is an outspoken critic of these developments and has analyzed them in depth.
